Dakar internships

Dakar is the capital of Senegal, located on the westernmost point of the African continent. Noisy and bustling, Dakar is home to the region's largest port and is a friendly and welcoming city to visitors. Sustainable Cities has been working with the Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine (IAGU) and the Municipality of Dakar to establish community-based projects that increase the inclusion and empowerment of women and youth. Priority is given to projects that will reduce poverty and increase sustainability. Interns in Dakar are housed at IAGU and contribute to a number of initiatives, including community based projects on composting and urban agriculture as well as the development of a GIS database for the city.

Olivier Ballard-Laliberte - Project Officer : Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Natif de Montréal, j'ai grandi en banlieue, plus précisément à Repentigny. J'ai complété mes études universitaires à l'Université de Montréal, où j'ai obtenu mon baccalauréat en géographie environnementale. C'est au cours de ces études que j'ai découvert la géomatique et, incidemment, le merveilleux monde des SIG. J'ai donc choisi un maximum de cours liés à la géomatique dans le but de me spécialiser dans ce domaine. En 2010, j'ai d'ailleurs suivi un stage en cartographie au sein de Collectif Quartier, à la Ville de Montréal

Ainsi, mes expériences professionnelles et internationales étant relativement limitées, ce stage avec Sustainable Cities me paraît depuis le départ l'occasion idéale de développer davantage mes capacités. De plus, le projet de SIG municipal de la Ville de Dakar m'enthousiasme particulièrement. En se dotant d'un tel outil, la ville sera en mesure d'améliorer grandement l'efficacité de ses différents services. En tant que dernier stagiaire travaillant sur ce projet, mon rôle sera principalement d'assurer la pérennité du projet. Ce but pourra être atteint en mettant l'accent sur la formation du personnel municipal, et surtout en continuant de travailler avec le comité de suivi actuel, qui aura le mandat de s'assurer que le SIG continuera d'être développé. Il est également essentiel de continuer le travail d'éducation – déjà bien entamé – pour que tous les acteurs municipaux comprennent le potentiel du SIG et les avantage qu'il présente au niveau de leur travail.

Born in Montreal, I grew up in Repentigny. I completed my studies at the University of Montreal, where I obtained my Bachelor in Environmental Geography. It was during these studies that I discovered geomatics and the wonderful world of GIS. So, I chose the maximum geomatics-related courses in order to specialize in this area. In 2010, I completed an internship in cartography in Collectif Quartier, at the Ville de Montréal

Given that my work and international experience is relatively limited, this internship with Sustainable Cities seems to be the ideal opportunity to further develop my abilities. In addition, the GIS project of the City of Dakar seems particularly exciting. By developing such a tool, the city will be able to greatly improve the effectiveness of its various services. As the last intern working on this project, my role is primarily to ensure the sustainability of the project. This goal can be achieved by focusing on the training of municipal staff, and especially by continuing to work with the current monitoring committee, which will be mandated to ensure that the GIS will continue to be developed. It is also essential to continue to publicize the GIS to the staff so that all stakeholders understand the potential of municipal GIS and how it can help them in their work.

Eve St-Laurent - Project Officer - Urban Agriculture

Originaire de la ville de Québec, je vis à Montréal depuis maintenant 8 ans. Je suis diplômée de l'UQAM au baccalauréat en design de l'environnement et j'obtiendrai sous peu mon diplôme de maîtrise en urbanisme avec spécialité pour les pays en développement à l'Université de Montréal.

Il y a quelques années, j'ai eu la chance de me rendre au Niger afin de travailler avec des coopératives d'artisans faisant partie d'un projet de commerce équitable. Cette expérience m'a beaucoup appris tant au niveau professionnel que personnel. Ce fut le début d'une véritable passion pour les voyages, la découverte d'autres pays et le plaisir que me procure les rencontres avec de nouvelles cultures. C'est aussi ce qui a été à la base de mon intérêt pour les villes tant au niveau de leurs designs que des divers modes de gestion qu'on y trouve. C'est en partie ce qui m'a poussé à poursuivre mes études en urbanisme, m'intéressant particulièrement aux pays du Sud, mais aussi au design urbain, à l'environnement et aux moyens qui peuvent être pris afin d'assurer un développement durable des villes.

En 2011, j'ai travaillé au sein de l'Éco-quartier Notre-Dame-de-Grâce à Montréal. Je faisais alors de la sensibilisation auprès des communautés locales et des formations en ce qui à trait au compostage, au recyclage et à l'importance des espaces verts dans nos milieux de vie.

Le poste de chargée de projet en agriculture urbaine pour la Ville de Dakar m'a tout de suite intéressée puisqu'il correspond parfaitement à mes intérêts et connaissances. J'aurai l'opportunité d'apprendre de mes collègues dakarois tout en partageant mes connaissances. Je vois cette expérience comme un défi très intéressant et je ferai de mon mieux afin de faire de ce projet une réussite.

Originally from Quebec City, I have lived in Montreal for 8 years now. I graduated from UQAM with a bachelor's degree of Environmental Design and I will soon obtain my master's degree in urban planning with specialization in developing countries at the University of Montreal. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Niger to work with artisans cooperatives that are part of a fair trade project. This experience taught me a lot, both professionally and personally. This was the beginning of a passion for travels, the discovery of other countries and the pleasure I get from encounters with new cultures. This was also the basis for my interest in cities, in their design as well as that the various modes of management they exhibit. This is partly what prompted me to continue my studies in urban planning, with a main interest in the global south, but also in urban design, environment and the approaches that can be taken to ensure sustainable development in cities.

In 2011, I worked for the Eco-quartier Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Montreal. I was working to raise awareness with local communities and training about composting, recycling and the importance of green spaces in our living environments.

The position of project manager in Urban Agriculture for the City of Dakar immediately interested me because it fits perfectly with my interests and knowledge. I will have the opportunity to learn from my colleagues in Dakar while sharing my knowledge. I see this experience as a very interesting challenge and I will do my best to make this project a success.
