Canmore - Mining The Future

canmore_townsiteCanmore is a fast growing town located at the eastern edge of the beautiful Rocky Mountains about 100 kilometers from Calgary in Alberta. Its industrial legacy is coal mining so what a great name for their sustainable vision - Mining the Future. The mines closed in the 1970’s and Canmore was the host to the cross country ski events of the 1988 Olympics, an event that was pivotal to the future of the town. Approximately 1/3 of the population is made up of non-permanent residents who seek out the healthy lifestyle that the mountains offer during weekends and holidays. The town is surrounded by lands that are mostly designated for nature conservation.

enVision Montpelier

Montpelier, Vermont USA

montpelier_postcardMontpelier, Vermont is the state capital and, with Gwendolyn Hallsmith as the Director of Community Planning, it is not surprising that they have a strong sustainability planning process underway called enVision Montpelier. Their goal is to be the first sustainable state capital in the US and have joined in a Capital City Challenge with Olympia, Washington (another member of the PLUS Network) to see who gets to the goal first!
