Description
ICSC brought together a consortium of experts from Canada and China to design two demonstration "Green Buildings" projects in the province of Shandong: one in Qingdao on Pingdu Road in the Zhongshan Road Neighbourhood and the other on the campus of the Shandong Institute of Architects and Engineers in Jinan. Both were supported by the Natural Resources Canada Technology Early Action Measures (TEAM) Fund
The Qingdao project involved the design and rehabilitation of a residential courtyard. The project also included the specification of appropriate energy efficiency measures and technology, the development of a software package in Chinese for modelling energy impacts of different design options and provided training workshops on the design of green buildings for architects, engineers, construction managers and planners.
The second demonstration project, done in partnership with Habitat Design and Consulting Ltd, helped the Shandong Institute of Architecture and Engineering (SDAI) design a green dormitory as part of its green campus plans. The dormitory’s green measures include: improved air quality through demand-controlled ventilation; energy efficiency through insulation, air tightness, and high-efficiency windows; space heating and cooling using solar shading devices, solar or wind-driven natural cooling systems, solar hot water heating; and water-saving features including grey water recycling.
The Jinan Green Dormitory Project was designated a "National Demonstration Project" by the Chinese Ministry of Construction and the building was the focus of a Global Renewable Energy Conference held in Jinan in September 2005.
