youth-led development

Vernon youth

Vernon and OKIB, Canada

Youth from the City of Vernon and the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) are participating in a four-month project in early 2009 to develop a youth guide for their community. Their ideas are being put to paper through a series of visioning and asset mapping activities enabling them to map community assets including resources, recreation areas, youth-friendly spaces, organizations and opportunities. Youth from Fulton High School's Global Education Class have been volunteering to steer this process and have assisted the project's Youth Engagement Coordinator in engaging over 700 local youth. The youth have developed a Youth Guide for the City of Vernon and are providing the City and the OKIB with tools and suggestions on ways to make the area more 'youth friendly.'
