Informal Settlement Upgrading
Friday, 17 April 2009 15:34

Meghan MuldoonThe Community Mobilization and Youth Initiative internship resulted in 10 community meetings being conducted with over 400 residents of the unplanned settlements of the City of Dar es Salaam. Through these meetings, Cities Alliance collected opinions from community members regarding their priorities for settlement upgrading.

Dar informal settlement Planners learned about what residents wanted to see improved in their water, sanitation, solid waste collection, and roads services. These community priorities were included in the Action Plan, the document which will guide the upgrading process through the year 2015. This internship also resulted in Cities Alliance amassing a network of community-based groups, particularly women and youth groups, which will help support the work of upgrading the unplanned settlements in the long term.

ICSC partner Cities Alliance is a joint programme of the Dar es Salaam City Council and UN-HABITAT.
